The Live-Action Sequel to an Underrated Anime Just Got a Fantastic Update

Die-hard anime fans can all agree that Golden Kamuy is pretty much one of the most underrated anime, even after four riveting seasons. The series premiered on April 9, 2018, and five years later, its penultimate season wrapped on June 26, 2023. After the conclusion of Season 4, a final season was announced to be in production and is expected sometime next year. However, before then, there’s finally a fruitful update about the anime’s live-action sequel film, which will continue the story from Netflix’s nine-episode Golden Kamuy: The Hunt of Prisoners in Hokkaido series that released in October 2024.

News recently broke that the upcoming Golden Kamuy live-action film adaptation will premiere on March 13, 2026, in Japanese theaters. A brand-new trailer and poster have also been released, along with casting details. Kento Yamazaki and Anna Yamada star as Sugimoto and Asirpa, respectively, alongside fellow confirmed cast members: Gordon Maeda, Asuka Kudo, Shuntaro Yanagi, Akihisa Shiono, Yuma Yamoto, Ryohei Otani, Maryjun Takahashi, Yuki Sakurai, Katsuya, Taishi Nakagawa, Kazuki Kitamura, Hiroyuki Ikeuchi, Katsumi Kiba, Arata Iura, Hiroshi Tamaki, and Hiroshi Tachi.

Serving as director for the new Golden Kamuy film is Kenji Katagiri, who helmed the Golden Kamuy: The Hunt of Prisoners in Hokkaido series. The director takes over from Shigeaki Kubo at production studio CREDEUS while Tsutomu Kuroiwa returns as screenwriter, and Yutaka Yamada returns as music composer. In anticipation of the sequel’s arrival, a two-part theatrical animation adapting the Sapporo Beer Factory arc is slated for October 10 and 31 of this year, while the final season of Golden Kamuy is scheduled to begin airing in January 2026.

There’s Another ‘Golden Kamuy’ Live-Action Film Sequel!

Before the new live-action sequel, another came to life last year, written and illustrated by Satoru Noda. It opened in Japanese theaters on January 19, 2024, and Netflix released it worldwide on May 19, with its story continuing as a live-action TV series that premiered later that year. That series was Golden Kamuy: The Hunt of Prisoners in Hokkaido, also written and illustrated by Satoru Noda, and which premiered on WOWOW on October 6, 2024, after which it debuted on Netflix on February 6, 2025. As for the next season of Golden Kamuy, it is expected to adapt the remaining chapters of the popular manga to conclude Sugimoto and Asirpa’s story.

All four seasons of Golden Kamuy are available to stream on Crunchyroll. Stay tuned to Collider for further updates ahead of the live-action sequel’s release and watch its trailer below.
