Michael B. Jordan lit the world on fire earlier this year with his award-worthy performance in Sinners, but several years ago, he starred in a fan-favorite courtroom drama that’s returned to streaming charts. Jordan stars alongside Jamie Foxx (Django Unchained) and Brie Larson (Captain Marvel) in Just Mercy, the 2019 legal thriller following a world-renowned defense attorney who takes it upon himself to free an instead on death row who was wrongly convicted of murder. Just Mercy recently began streaming on HBO Max globally, where the film has become an overnight sensation, charting in the top 10 in more than 15 countries.
Just Mercy is, unfortunately, not streaming anywhere in America, but with the film picking up steam overseas, it likely will be soon. It was well-liked by critics, who rated the film a “Certified Fresh” 85% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it found extraordinary success among general audiences. The film currently sits at 99% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter, making it the highest-rated movie of Jordan’s career by fans. Just Mercy even found moderate success at the global box office, grossing $50 million against a reported budget of $25 million.
Just Mercy is based on the book of the same name by Bryan Stevenson, with Andrew Lanham and Destin Daniel Cretton also contributing to the script. Cretton also directed the movie, which came just two years before he made his MCU directorial debut on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which stars Simu Liu. Cretton is back at Marvel, currently working on Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and he was even attached to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty before the project was reworked into Avengers: Doomsday. The Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony, have since signed on as directors.
What’s Next for Michael B. Jordan?
After starring in Sinners earlier this year, Michael B. Jordan is attached to lead several exciting projects coming up in the next few years. Arguably, the most intriguing of the bunch is a sequel to I Am Legend, which will see Jordan star alongside Will Smith. He’ll also lead a new adaptation of The Thomas Crown Affair opposite Andor’s Adria Arjona, which has been set for release on March 5, 2027. Jordan is even directing and starring in another Creed movie, one that’s expected to enter production soon and likely be released sometime next year.
